MEETING: As usual, it is the third Thursday, September15th at 7:00 PM at what has become our new location, “the Cottage at Lake Lilly” in Maitland. Directions: from Horatio and Orlando Ave. (AKA 17-92), Go West on Horatio to Maitland Ave. Then left (South) on Maitland Ave. to the curve in the road (where you have to turn to keep from driving into Lake Lilly). Turn right (West) onto Lake Lilly Drive, a restricted usage road that curves around the lake. The destination is a small white house on the left, about .2 mile. Park and come in. The address is 701 Lake Lilly Dr., Maitland FL 32751. We promise that it will not be pouring down rain when you arrive, as it has been the last 2 months. What is that about “the third time is a gusher…?”
AUGUST EVENT FOLLOW UP : On Saturday August 20th we met at Fiddler’s Green Irish Pub in Winter Park. Both beer and food were consumed in shocking quantities and the survivors remembered having a good time. The good news (for the guys in the Club) is that Beau Gable was leading in a best of three tournament with last year’s champion, Dody Beach, at least at the time that your Editor had to leave. We trust that, whatever the outcome, a good time was had by all and that no cars overheated during this “driving” event. This is a good event for the times that it is too hot for anyone other than mad dogs and Englishmen.
SEPTEMBER DRIVING EVENT: This month’s event will run on “MG Time” which means that it will be late! As you know we have a traditional October Overnight-er in (can it be?) October. We saw signs of trouble when the Brit Bash in Vero Beach was set for October 29, 2011. The solution came to us when our friends in the MG Car Club Florida encouraged us to consider holding a joint overnight event and the best fit was the first weekend in October. Close enough to say that it is late September but far enough away to avoid the late October Brit Bash!
The plan is for you to call the Tuckaway Shores Resort at 1441 S. Miramar Ave., Indiatlantic, FL 32903 (1-800-820-1441) and make your reservation for the night of Saturday, October 1, 2011. Mention the MG Club and they will give you a discount from the normal rate. Bring some pre-dinner snacks and meet with your MG Buddies as we decide/argue about where to go for dinner. For more info about the Tuckaway, visit www.tuckawayshores.net.
They say that getting there is half of the fun, but it may be more than that. Since folks will be coming from all over, meeting up for the drive will have to be a local thing. I would suggest that the folks from the Orlando area meet on the West side at our traditional launching-off point, the McDonald’s restaurant near the corner of Aloma Avenue and Howell Branch Road at 8:30AM. If we plan to depart at 9:15, I think we can stop along the way for a leisurely lunch and still arrive in time for a nice walk on the beach.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Now is the time to get going and make your reservations for the Brit Bash on October 29, 2011 at Riverside Park in Vero Beach. For information and registration information, go to www.mgcarclubflorida.org. Do it now. At the next meeting, we will decide on how we will travel over there for the event.
Our own GOF, version #46 (Mark XLVI) will be right here at the Altamonte Hilton on March 23-25, 2012. Although it is too early to make your registration, you can start your plans to attend by setting aside the time on your calendar and resolving to watch our website that is dedicated to that Gathering. It is currently in process, but you can go ahead and save www.gofsouth as one of your favorite web sites. The GOF committee is working on the program, selecting the menus and generally working to make sure a good time will be had by all.
